Statistics reveal a 43 per cent rise in tribunal claims

The much awaited statistics for the Employment Tribunal Service and the EAT in Great Britain have been published by the Tribunals Service. Six months late, the statistics for the period 1 April 2007 to 31 March 2008 should have appeared last autumn. Although the reason for the delay is not clear, the statistics make for interesting reading, with 189,303 claims being accepted in 2007/08 - a 43 per cent rise on the 2006/07 figure of 132,577, and a 65 per cent increase on the 2005/06 figure of 115,039.

Equal pay disputes topped the league, with 62,706 claims accepted by the Tribunal Service. This was followed by 55,712 working time claims in second place and unfair dismissal coming in third at 40,941.

The figures also reveal that age discrimination claims leapt from 972 in 2006/07 to 2,949 in 2007/08.
